The unexpected death of her husband sends a woman and her seven children, ages 2-14, into emotional turmoil and financial crisis in 1967 Dublin. She is forced to borrow money from a ruthless loan shark to make ends meet. She faces her dismal existence by selling fruits and vegetables at an open air market where she spends time with a best friend who gives her encouragement. Wishing to escape her existence, if only for a short time, she dreams of finding enough money to attend an upcoming Tom Jones concert. She realizes her dream by accepting her first date with a French baker. Her kids pool their money so she can buy a new dress. Of course, eventually the family has to face the loan shark, but this is a movie where obstacles are maybe too easily overcome.

На тлі пишних балів і політичних інтриг при дворі короля Великобританії Георга II погляду глядача постає життя мешканців маєтку лорда Річмонда - одного з найбагатших і найвпливовіших наближених монарха. Подружжя Річмонд виховують п'ятьох дітей: сина Чарльза і дочок Емілі, Керолайн, Луїзу і Сару. Леді Керолайн вже зовсім доросла і батьки не на жарт стурбовані її заміжжям.На званому вечорі на неї звертає увагу немолодий, але харизматичний державний діяч Генрі Фокс і через деякий час просить її руки. Категорична відмова батьків змушує коханих таємно обвінчатися, що викликає страшний гнів лорда Річмонда - він назавжди виганяє дочку з сімейного маєтку. Each of the five women, different from the other in temperament and capability, is the emotional support system, although at times reluctantly, for each other, with the eldest assuming the role of a 'somewhat meddling' overseer. But then into this comes an elderly brother, a priest too senile to perform his clerical functions, who has "come home to die" after a lifetime in Africa; as well, there also arrives the boy's father, riding up on a motorcycle, only to announce that he's on his way to Spain to fight against Franco. Nevertheless, life goes on for the five sisters, although undeniably affected by the presence of the two men, they continue to cope as a close-knit unit... until something happens that disrupts the very fabric of that cohesiveness beyond repair.

У результаті загинуло 10 бійців ІРРА (ірландської республіканської армії), ще 13 продовжували голодування доти, поки їх стан не був визнаний критичним.У ході голодування, народ Північної Ірландії обрав депутатом англійського парламенту лідера ув'язнених Боббі Сандса. До своїх обов'язків він так і не зміг приступити...
Фільм добре висвітлює роль і участь матерів борців за свободу рідної країни. Показує які труднощі ставить перед ними доля і на які жертви доводиться йти.
