Фільм заснований на реальних подіях. На початку 70-х років XX століття, коли по Камбоджі розповзається рух «червоних кхмерів», французький антрополог Франсуа Бізо живе в одному з сіл, займається вивченням місцевої культури, і в якості співробітника Французького інституту Далекого Сходу бере участь у реставрації Ангкор-Вата, у нього тут сім'я, і за роки, проведені в країні, він навчився непогано говорити по-кхмерськи. Одного разу в своїх дослідженнях він зайшов на територію, контрольовану «червоними кхмерами», де 10 жовтня 1971 був узятий в полон, а для «червоних кхмерів» будь-який іноземець - це апріорі американський шпигун, який працює на ЦРУ, і тому його слід стратити.
