Сюжет

Lemuel Gulliver (Lubomír Kostelka) has had a car accident and continues his journey across the unknown countryside on foot. On the road he finds a dead rabbit dressed like a man and takes a watch from its waistcoat breast pocket. The half-ruined house that he enters reminds Lemuel of his childhood and brings up a painful memory of a dearly loved girl Markéta who was drowned years ago. Gulliver finds himself in Balnibarbi, a country where he doesn't understand the laws and habits and so continually offends against public decency. It is a day when people are ordered to keep their mouths shut and they force their visitor to follow suit. He faces harsh interrogation and finds it difficult to explain that he is not the rabbit Oscar whose watch has been found in his possession.

Middle-aged Antonin and his friends, the major, now retired, and the canon, are in the river, swimming and philosophizing. Then it starts to rain. It just seems to be that sort of summer. Antonin runs the swimming bath with his portly wife Katherine... A man appears with his horse-drawn caravan. He lays a striped pole across the river and walks over. With a handstand and a magic trick, Ernie the Conjuror invites everyone to that evening's performance... Ernie is a tightrope walker of only modest skill, but with a slim and beautiful assistant, Anna. Antonin speaks to her. Сюжет

За умов, коли одним дано все, а іншим нічого, несміливим героям залишається лише одна свобода - мріяти.
Подібним відчуттям життя та світу пронизана художня тканина більшості фільмів Нємця. Збірник "меланхолійних бурлесків", стилізованих під німе кіно початку століття, "Страдники кохання" - про мрїї як притулок, де можна сховатися від смутку, розпачу й нестерпної сірості життя.
Уривки снів і галюцинацій, часто лише миттєвих, де недосказанного, як уві сні, завжди більше, ніж висказанного, відтворюють придуманий світ сентиментальних мелодрамам та трагікомедій початку століття, де герої - невдахи, пригнічені відчуттям власного безсилля, знаходять те, чого їх позбавило реальне життя.
Вони переживають неймовірні романтичні і еротичні пригоди, але, повернувшись в реальність, марно намагаються знайти місце, де були так щасливі, і відчувають себе втраченими в добре знайомому, проте чужому та ворожому світі.

A small group of adult bourgeois friends are on a day outing in the country, that outing which includes having a picnic. While they are going for a walk after the picnic, they encounter a group of officious looking men who commandeer them to a small clearing. Although there is no direct threat and the picnickers are not scared, they nonetheless feel the need to do what the men say. The men, led by one called Rudolph, set the rules of "the game". Ultimately, the picnickers learn that Rudolph was supposed to invite them to a party nearby. Much like the game, the party's host sets the rules for the party to which the picnickers and all the other guests must abide. Order in the eyes of the host seems to be paramount. Although the picnickers and the other guests enjoy many aspects of the party, some just do not want to be there, such thinking which cannot be tolerated.
