In New Orleans, a series of horrific murders of priests are occurring around the city's Catholic churches. The diocese calls in Father Michael (Cross) to fight the powerful demon, known as Daesidarius, or The Unholy. The Father's faith is tested almost to the breaking point as the demon - disguised as a stunningly beautiful lady - attempts to seduce Father Michael into breaking his vows. Father Michael soon learns how the Unholy works - by murdering the sinner in the act of sinning, then sending that person's soul to Hell. Will this one priest's inner strength be enough to stop this monster - or will he join the ranks of the other ill-fated priests?

Професор коледжу в провінційному американському містечку Сейвіллі Майкл Берджес написав серйозну історичну працю - книгу під назвою «Солодка свобода» про часи війни за незалежність США, засновану на реальних подіях. Незабаром літературними працями Борджеса зацікавилися кіношники і купили права на екранізацію його твору.У найтихіший Сейвілл приїжджає знімальна група для натурних зйомок. Місцеві жителі шалено раді, що в їх нудному, одноманітному житті намітилася така грандіозна розвага. Але от кому не до радості, то це Майклу Берджеса. Поспілкувавшись з автором сценарію «Солодкої свободи» Стенлі Гулд, для якого це чи не перший самостійно написаний сценарій, Майкл з жахом виявляє, що з його книги зробили банальний водевіль, та й той написаний з рук геть погано.
Головна зірка фільму - актор Елліот Джеймс - ледве приїхавши в Сейвілл, тут же почав заводити романи з місцевими красунями, почавши з дружини директора коледжу Леслі, а також приділяючи особливо пильну увагу подружці Майкла - Гретхен. Сам же Майкл несподівано закохується в виконавицю однієї з головних ролей, актрису Фейт Хілі, майстерно відбиваючи при цьому всі спроби Гретхен одружити його на собі і відвідуючи час від часу свою вижилу з розуму матінку.
