Під час вторгнення прусської армії до Польщі у 1793 році молодого польського шляхтича Яківа рятує від ув'язнення незнайомець, який хоче натомість отримати список його колег-змовників. Слідуючи за своїм таємничим рятівником через усю країну, Яків бачить загальний хаос і моральну розбещеність, включаючи смерть його батька і зраду друга, який вкрав його наречену. Очевидно, збожеволівши від побаченого, він скоює низку безмотивних і кривавих убивств.
