872-й рік. Чимало королівств, що нині об’єднані в Англію, схилили голову перед іноземним загарбником – данами. Нескореним і самотнім у своїй боротьбі лишається тільки Велике Королівство Вессекса під проводом короля Альфреда. На тлі цих буремних подій проходить життя нашого героя, Утреда. Він, син дворянина-саксонця, потрапляє в полон до данів, і ті виховують його як свого. Змушений обирати між землею, де він народився, і народом, який його виховав, Утред намагається відшукати своє "я". Хто він? Саксонець чи дан?
