Джон Годяк – американський актор українського походження, зірка студії "Метро-Ґолдвін-Маєр" ДЖОН ГОДЯК (16 квітня 1914, Пітсбурґ - 19 жовтня 1955, Лос-Анджелес), нагадує Diaspora.ua
Батьки Джона (Івана) - Володимир Годяк і Анна Погорілець приїхали у США 1912 р. з села Грушатичі на Львівщині. З Пітсбурґу згодом родина переїхала у Мічіґана і осіла в українській колонії в Гемтреку. Батько Джона тут долучився не лише до громадського, а й культурного життя української громади, зокрема грав ... у театрі. Разом з ним до театрального життя долучився й Джон. Крім того юнак навчався у танцювальній студії Василя Авраменка та брав участь у діяльності організації Молодих українських націоналістів.
У 1930 році він отримав стипендію у Вестерн Юніверсіті для студій драми, однак не склалося. Можливо, інший хлопець на тому і полишив би театральне мистецтво. Але не Джон Годяк. Влаштувавшись на роботу у канцелярію "Шевроле", вечорами він грав у радіовиставах. Причому для цього йому довелося здолати свій акцент і довести керівництву радіостанції, що він має талант. Невдовзі це стало очевидним, і він залишив іншу роботу, крім радіо, переїхав до Чікаґо і став постійним драматичним актором на радіо.
Через кілька років у 1940 р. харизматичного актора з яскравою зовнішністю запросили у Голівуд, він працював з найкращими студіями - «ХХ століття- Фокс» і «Метро-Ґолдвін-Маєр». Дебютна роль у фільмі «Незнайомець у місті» (1943), а головним чином - у трилері реж. А. Гічкока «Рятувальний човен», фільмі «Воєнний суд над бунтівниками» та інших, принесли йому неабияку популярність. Всього за свою недовгу (12 років) голлівудську кар'єру Джон Годяк зіграв щонайменше у 34 фільмах, переважно його героями були американські військовики. Останньою роботою Джона Годяка став фільм «На межі всесвіту». 41-річний актор якраз збирався у будинку своїх батьків у Лос-Анджелесі на кіностудію, коли у нього стався серцевий напад.
Прикметна деталь до портрету українця Джона Годяка. Ще на початку акторської кар'єри продюсери йому радили змінити своє прізвище на більш американське, аби легше вимовлялося і запам'ятовувалося, але він відмовився. І пояснив це тим, що не буде цуратися свого українського походження, а навпаки хоче показати іншим українцям в Америці, що й з українським прізвищем, не відмовляючись від свого коріння, можна стати відомим і здійснити свою мрію: "Я хочу, щоб українці відчули, що у них є шанс. Може, не в цій сфері, а в іншій. Я отримую багато листів від українців, які дякують мені за те, що я не змінив своє ім'я, і що я не прикидаюся ні поляком, ні росіянином".
В Україні про відомого американського актора українського походження дізналися зі відновленням Незалежності. Водночас в історії кінематографу США він завжди був і лишається помітною постаттю. Серед іншого це підтверджує і його ім'я на Алеї зірок у Голлівуді.

Haven D. Allridge is the editor-in-chief of the News-Intelligencer newspaper in St. Howard, a town where he and his family have lived all their lives. Peggy, Randy and Marcia Staunton - Haven's married daughter, her husband, and their child - now live about thirty miles away in Bridgewood County, which is adjacent to the St. Howard town limits. Randy is the county prosecutor. Haven learns first hand the corruption of the county sheriff, K.C. Burke, and his associates when, in an innocent enough move in picking up an acquaintance, Wilfred Jackson, at a bus stop located within the county and lightly bumping but not damaging a county sign with his car in the process, Haven and Wilfred are hauled into jail, where they spend the night before appearing before the county judge the next morning. Beaten up by prisoners with who they shared the cell, Wilfred, who has no money and pleads not guilty to the charge of soliciting rides on the highway, is held at a labor camp for trial in thirty days. Haven, who does have money, is fined $68 for failure to produce a license, damaging county property and leaving the scene of a crime (the bumping of the sign), the fine only dropped when it comes to Burke's attention Haven's relationship to Randy. Regardless, Haven begins a media campaign against the corruption exacted by Burke and his associates, by writing a front page article about his experience and requesting readers to tell their stories, which he prints on subsequent front pages. As such, Haven compiles an extensive dossier of corruption within Bridgewood County. Burke fights back by his underhanded means against Haven and the newspaper. These stories get to the state's attorney general's office, with Charles Johnson - Chick to his friends - tasked with leading the case against Burke and his men. This case is to be Chick's last for the AG, as he is just about to move into working for a private firm, such a law career which is more financially lucrative than being a public prosecutor. Upon Chick's arrival in St. Howard, he finds that not only have the multitude of people who supplied those stories not willing to talk, even if subpoenaed to the hearing, but that Haven also has stopped his campaign against Burke and is not talking. Chick knows that Haven's testimony is key. He finds that Haven had a secret meeting with Burke, and among others his legal muscle Nelson S. Tarsson, which was before Haven's sudden change and the disappearance of all Haven's files on the matter. Chick has to get Haven to change his mind before the hearing, or at least find out what happened at that secret meeting as leverage if he has any hope of exacting justice against Burke and Tarsson.

Paula and Eddie become involved; each for their own reasons, Fritzi, Paula's old beau Tom, and Eddie's pal Johnny try to break up the relationship. Then Eddie's past catches up with him in an unexpected way.

Anne Parkson feels neglected by her lawyer-husband Ted, so she falls in love with night-club owner Tony Arnello, a shady character who is a client of her husband's. This being a MGM picture and MGM known to strive for General Audience ratings and avoid the dreaded Adult Audience tag, any affair that takes place is barely implied. Tony, a no-goodnik, kills Claire Lorrison, but Anne's compact is found near the body. Arnello threatens her with exposure unless she keeps quiet, as she is the only one who knows he is guilty. This being an Arch Oboler film, it is also filled with lots of "stream of consciousness" techniques in which the audience is able to share the thoughts of the central character. Oboler is highly praised in some quarters for bringing this from his radio programs where, of course, it was needed to let the radio audience know what was going on. In films, it comes off as just somebody talking to themselves. Gifford talks to herself a lot in this one, mainly about whether to commit suicide. Not in a MGM General Audience-rated movie you don't.

During the World War II, a soldier is hit by a grenade that deforms his face and leaves him with amnesia. Sometime later, he is recovered and learns that his name is George Taylor and he is discharged from the army. He finds a letter written by a man called Larry Cravat that would be his pal and he goes to Los Angeles to seek out Larry Cravat to find his identity. He goes to a bank, a hotel, a Turkish bath and a night-club following leads. He is beaten up by Hubert, the henchman of Anzelmo that dumps him at the front door of the singer Christy Smith that works in a night-club. George tells his story to her and Christy decides to help him. She calls her boss and friend Mel Phillips that schedules a lunch with his friend Police Lt. Donald Kendall and Christy. They learn that Larry Cravat was a private investigator that somehow received US$ 2 million three years ago from Germany from a Nazi that was immediately deceased. Then George receives a tip to go to the Terminal Dock where he meets Anzelmo that explains that Larry Cravat is wanted by the police for the murder of a man at the dock to keep the money. Larry has disappeared and Anzelmo believes George Taylo is the man that was with him and probably the killer. George further investigation finds that a man named Conroy was a witness of the crime, but he was hit and run by a truck and is interned at the Lambeth Sanatorium. When George meets Conroy, he realizes that the man was stabbed but he tells where he hid the suitcase with the money before dying. Now George is close to solve the mystery.
