Фільм знято на основі роману австралійського письменника Моріса Уеста.
На образ головного героя, Кирила Лакоти, архієпископа-митрополита Львівського, його надихнуло життя двох українських греко-католицьких священнослужителів: кардинала Йосифа Сліпого та єпископа Григорія Лакоти.

Йосиф Сліпий після 18 років заслання був звільнений урядом Микити Хрущова із сибірського ГУЛАГу в 1963 році, в рік публікації роману, після політичного тиску з боку папи Івана XXIII і президента США Джона Ф. Кеннеді.

Григорій Лакота помер 12 листопада 1950 у концтаборі Абезь біля Воркути.
