After losing a huge sum to a police officer, Kabir Nayak; four slackers: Aditya Shrivastav, Boman Contractor, Manav Shrivastav and Deshbandhu Roy find themselves unemployed and broke. Then they come upon Kabir, who apparently lives a wealthy lifestyle now along with his wife, Kamini, and sister, Kiya. They intrude in his life, find out he is having an affair with a woman named Gulabo, and blackmail him into making them partners. They also rope in a gangster-turned-Sadhu, Bata Bhai, into investing in an oil project - but are humiliated and go on the run after finding that Kabir has conned them. With an enraged Bata on their tail, the hapless foursome manage to escape to Macau with the help of a gangster, Mohsin Bhai. It is here they will run into Kabir - who is now the owner of 'Four Jokers' Casino - and make elaborate plans to avenge their humiliation as well as ensure that he winds up alone and penniless.

When his father, Jatin, dies in a mysterious boating accident, Jai's suspicion is aroused by the appearance of an oddball detective, Happi. The only article that can help him in his investigation is an 8 X 10 photograph taken just minutes before the accident by his mother Savitri that shows Jatin surrounded by his best friend and lawyer, Anil, his adopted son, Adit and younger brother, Sundar. Jai decides to use this photograph to go into the past to unravel the mystery surrounding Jatin's death. As he discovers clues he realizes that his father was actually murdered and that everyone on the boat had a motive. Now on a mission to unmask the killer, he undertakes the dangerous journey of visiting the past repeatedly. A cat and mouse game ensues, with the killer outwitting Jai at every turn. As the bodies pile up and time begins to run out, Jai ventures into the photo one last time with the killer on his heels. Does Jai discover who the killer is? Siddhant decides to delve deeper, much to the chagrin of his prosecutor-friend, Major Akash Kapoor, not realizing that he will incur the wrath of his superiors; his work will come under sharp scrutiny; the journalist, Kaavya Shastri, assisting him will be arrested; and he may end up being transferred to violent and isolated areas in Assam and Bihar.

He joins a street theatre group run by a reformed dacoit Sidhu (Pankaj Kapur) who uses street theatre as a medium to bring about an awakening in the masses. Ashfaque struggles to give a creative vent to the actor in him in order to realize his dreams. Ashfaque's determined struggle pays off and he gets a break in films. He gets a new screen name - Sameer Khan. With the passage of time, the roles start becoming better and he moves up the success ladder in a very short time. Soon, he becomes Sameer Khan the superstar - one who can enact any role with finesse, get under the skin of any and every character with ease and walk away with audience applause. Sadly, amidst all adulation and applause, he slowly loses his own identity. He forgets his real self and imbibes all characteristics of the various roles essayed by him on screen. Corruption takes over his entire system, alienating him from all loved ones, including his wife Sneha (Vidya Balan). A shocking incident at a party changes everything, rocking Sameer Khan's lifestyle. He gets caught between his human self on one side and his corrupted superstar image on the other. Whether the conflict within him gives way to good sense and whether he is able to discard his corrupted image and emerge as a true life hero, becomes an integral part of this true life cinema.

Four slackers and con-men namely: Boman Contractor, who lives a wealthy lifestyle with his eccentric dad, Nari, who loves his antique car more than his son, and asks his son to leave when he damages the car; hot-headed Aditya and dim-witted Manav, orphaned brothers; and Deshbandhu Roy, a trickster who wears a magnetized belt; share a room with a lenient landlady, who eventually gives up on them and kicks them out. After a number of con tricks, the group are arrested by the Police, but released in the countryside. At this point they witness a car plummet down a cliff, with it's sole occupant, Bose, an underworld don, who, before dying, tells them that he has hidden 10 Crore Rupees in cash in the St. Sebastian's Garden, Goa, and if they find it, it is their's to keep. The group race toward Goa in Contractor's stolen car, little knowing that their plans will soon be foiled, albeit hilariously, by Police Inspector Kabir Nayak, who is angered at this Department for not appreciating his honesty, and is instead penalizing him by transferring him to Yavatmal; a bus hijacker-cum-bandit named Baabubhai, who holds Deshbandhu hostage, and Nari Contractor, who wants the money to repair his now completely damaged car. All want an equal part of the bounty, and each and everyone of them will do anything, even break-up their friendship, rules, laws, and regulations in order to try and keep the cash for themselves, and eventually end up in a race, using a wide assortment of vehicles, and even an airplane, with the winner(s) keeping the entire amount for themselves.
