Фільм базується на напів автобіографічному романі Айн Ренд (авторка бестселеру «Атлант розправив плечі») і відображає реалії, які майбутня письменниця спостерігала, зростаючи в Радянському Союзі.❗️Ренд не давала дозволу на створення фільму і через війну навіть не знала про його зйомки.
Прем'єра фільму відбулася 1942 року на Венеційському кінофестивалі, де його визнали кінематографічним шедевром. У кінотеатрах Італії він став найприбутковішим фільмом року.
Сильна історія вразила серця італійців та несподівано надихнула на опір проти фашистської партії, яка тоді була при владі. За кілька місяців після прем'єри фільм було заборонено та наказано знищити диктатором Беніто Муссоліні. Проте оператори, ризикуючи життям, зберегли плівку. Коли вона була знайдена десятиліттями пізніше, Ренд дала дозвіл на реліз цієї версії.
