Одного разу дівчина за наказом злої мачухи довго прала біля колодязя, поранила палець до крові, опустила руку в воду, щоб обмити, і зронила веретено. Мачуха розсердилася і веліла їй дістати веретено з колодязя. Зневірившись, дівчина стрибнула у воду і виявилася в чарівному місці, де піч, яблуня і ворон вміють розмовляти. Вона стала працювати у господарстві в самої пані Метелиці. Коли дівчина трясла перину пані так старанно, що летіли пір'я, - у світі йшов сніг ...
