Sixteen-year-old students of a grammar school are supposed to write essays on "Love". The class best student Andrea (Jaroslava Schallerová) writes about a patriotic love to a country as she has no experience with a partner love. She has been living alone with her divorced pretty mother Eva (Milena Dvorská), a dentist, for many years. Recently, however, Eva met her former school-days love at a graduates' party, nowadays a famous hockey goalkeeper Brukner (Frantisek Velecký). Also his marriage fell apart; he leaves the national team and decides to leave Prague for his home town and to share flat with Eva. He takes with him his son Petr (Oldrich Kaiser), in Andrea's age, who gets his last chance to finish a grammar school in the town.

Фільм в алегоричній формі розповідає про деякі події угорської історії, зокрема про селянське повстання в 1890-і роки. Дія відбувається в полі, де кілька груп акторів символізують різні класи угорського суспільства: одна група — борються за свої права робітників і селян, інша — землевласників, третя — солдат тощо. У фільмі звучить багато народних і революційних пісень.
Сюжет
Фільм в алегоричній формі розповідає про деякі події угорської історії, зокрема про селянське повстання в 1890-і роки. Дія відбувається в полі, де кілька груп акторів символізують різні класи угорського суспільства: одна група — борються за свої права робітників і селян, інша — землевласників, третя — солдат тощо. Mikolás and his brother Adam rob travelers for their tyrannical father KozlÃk. During one of their "jobs" they end up with a young German hostage whose father escapes to return news of the kidnapping and robbery to the King. Kozlik prepares for the wrath of the King, and sends Mikolás to pressure his neighbor Lazar to join him in war. Persuasion fails, and in vengeance Mikolás abducts Lazar's daughter Marketa, just as she was about to join a convent. The King, meantime, dispatches an army and the religious Lazar will be called upon to join hands against Kozlik. Stripped-down, surreal, and relentlessly grimy account of the shift from Paganism to Christianity.
