Екранізація одноіменного роману французської письменниці Маргеріт Юрсенар (справжнє ім'я: Маргеріт Антуанетта Жанна Марі Ґіслен Кленеверк де Креянкур).Оригінальна назва фільму (як і книги) — „L`oeuvre au noir”, „Робота в чорному” —алхімічний термін, що означає першу стадію Magnum Opus (Великого Діяння) — нігредо. Суть цього етапа — очищення від всього поверхневого і тобі чужого, виведення зовнішнього світу за дужки, щоб стати на тяжкий шлях самопізнання, набуття свого справжнього „я”. Подібно до того, як чорна безодня не випускає за свої межі будь-який промінь світла, той, хто йде шляхом нігредо, мусить знайти опору та знання в самому собі, уникнувши спокус світу. Чорний — колір категоричний: це колір зречення, самоаналізу, самотності, утаємниченості. Він вимагає забуття інших кольорів, бо є початком світу небаченого, сліпучої пітьми містиків, духовного пробудження. Але шлях туди лежить через смерть — символічну чи реальну , це вже як вийде.
XVI ст. Фландрію, окуповану іспанцями, роздирають релігійні війни та Інквізиція.
Головний герой „Філософського каменю” — інтелектуал, якому тісна його доба. Сучасник Коперника та Кампанели, він поневіряється країнами, лікуючи людей, оскільки „в цьому безглуздому світі небагато внятних занять”. Решта його справ небезпечніше — складання філософських та науковоприродничих текстів, що розходяться з думкою Церкви, (ал)хімічні досліди, співчуття до нужденних та скривдженних, яких би переконань вони не дотримувалися. Відчуваючи на собі небажану увагу сильних світу сього, під вигаданим ім’ям він повертається в рідний провінційний Брюге. Якийсь час йому вдається спокійно працювати в лікарні для бідних, знаходячи розраду в розмовах з другом юності, у якого він мешкає, та місцевим пріором.
Ренесансна, богоборча концепція Зенона в фільмі, як і в романі Юрсенар, має приречений характер передчасності. Пріор намагається врятувати його, закликаючи до обачності. Зенон відповідає йому в одній з бесід: „Ви чудово знаєте, що ті, хто поділяє крамольні думки, досить розумні, щоб берегти мовчання... Що стосується мене, я бачу в цьому віковічну плутанину людських діянь — іспанці переслідують анабаптистів-реформаторів та відправляють їх на багаття, реформатори-євангелісти душать анабаптистів, а уряд Льєжу збагачується, постачаючи зброю обом сторонам! І все кволіше безумні крики тих, кого катують та палять”.
Невдовзі Зенон опиняється в полі зору Інквізиції. У в’язниці, після недовгого заперечення, він називає своє справжнє ім’я — він втомився ховатися. Зенона непокоїть, що чужа біографія може заступити його власну, йому раптом захотілося кинути рукавичку всій глупоті світу.
Але обвинувачення не проти пограти з ним в кота-мишу, починається тривалий процес, кінець якого хоч і відомий обом сторонам, однак не повинен бути швидкоплинним, адже в сіті попалася крупна риба. Проте, Зенон не потішить натовп та церковників своїми муками у вогні — він залишить цей світ по-філософськи. Робота в чорному завершена. Він прийшов до згоди з самим собою та уник спокус світу...

He manages to keep them (as well as his nephew and niece) as prisoners even after his death, through a binding testament. As the nephew unravels the mystery, we find out he cannot escape the house because Malpertuis is far more significant than we were led to believe.
