1896 рік. Анатолія. Молодий грек Ставрос Топузоглу живе в невеликому селі під горою Ерджіяс в Османській імперії. Разом зі своїм другом вірменином Вартаном він продає лід на місцевому ринку. І греки, і вірмени, зазнають постійних знущань та принижень з боку турків, тому Ставрос мріє про Америку — країну, яка є для нього уособленням свободи та великих можливостей. Ставши свідком одного з епізодів Хамідійської різні, під час якої гине Вартан, молодий чоловік розуміє, що готовий на все заради досягнення своєї мети.
Сюжет
