Девід Кроненберґ — канадський актор і кінорежисер, що відомий перш за все завдяки своїм роботам у жанрі трилера. 2002 року був удостоєний звання офіцера Ордену Канади, а 2009 року отримав Орден Почесного легіону.
Народився у родині литовських євреїв у Торонто. Його батько був журналістом, а мати — піаністкою. Здобув науковий ступінь з літератури у Торонтському університеті.
Кар’єра Кроненберґа у кіно почалася у 1966 з двох фільмів-скетчів і двох короткометражок. Далі у 1970-х його роботу фінансу ... вав канадський уряд. Іншими постійними партнерами Девіда Кроненберґа є актор Роберт Сільверман, постановник Кароль Спір, звукорежисер Браян Дей, монтажист Рональд Сандерс та художник по костюмам його сестра Деніз Кроненберґ.
До початку 2000-х років Кроненберґ спеціалізувався на жанрі «боді-хоррор» (буквально, «жах тіла», джерело жаху — незрозумілі мутації людського тіла). Багато з його картин піднімають проблему того, що прийнято вважати нормальним, а що — ненормальністю, хиткість межі між цими поняттями.
Після фантастичного трилера «Екзистенція» (1999, «Срібний ведмідь» Берлінського фестивалю), що вийшов на екрани за кілька місяців до «Матриці» і піднімає подібну філософську проблематику, увагу режисера стало зміщатися від ненормальностей тілесних до ненормальностей громадських.

Sometime in the future, the Canadian Academy for Erotic Inquiry is investigating the theories of parapsychologist Luther Stringfellow. Seven young adults volunteer to submit to a form of brain surgery that removes their power of speech but increases their power for telepathic communication. An unseen group of students observes the results. As the experiment progresses, Stringfellow's theories come to fruition. Later, aphrodisiacs and various other drugs are introduced to the subjects to expose an inherent polymorphous perversity. In the end, they are isolated from each other, provoking antagonism and violence between them, which results in two suicides.
