Чарлі Чаплін— легендарний англійський та американський кіноактор і кінорежисер першої половини XX століття. Визнаний одним із найкращих коміків в історії світового кіно, тричі нагороджений премією «Оскар».

Інша сюжетна лінія пов'язана з Воллі Вінтроп, сучасною жінкою, що захоплена історією кохання британського короля та звичайної американки. Воллі 28 років, вона вже декілька років заміжня з успішнім психотерапевтом, проте не дуже щаслива в стосунках і відчайдушно намагається завагітніти. Пристрасть до королівської історії передається їй від матері та бабусі. Коли вона потрапляє на аукціон Сотбі, де продаються особисті речі Едуарда і місіс Сімпсон, то поринає в атмосферу середини ХХ століття. Далі починається і її любовна лінія, з охоронцем аукціону Євгеном Колпаковим, чоловіком російського походження.Фільм побудований просто: коли погляд Воллі потрапляє на якусь річ (чашку, попільницю, скатертину, особистий лист) — і цей предмет, а слідом за ним і дія, відразу ж переноситься в епоху Волліс Сімпсон.
