Сюжет

Італія. 1943 рік. Молода вдова Чезіра залишає крамницю у Сан-Лоренцо колишньому коханцю і тікає від американських бомбардувань разом з донькою Розеттою у своє рідне містечко. Після виснажливої подорожі, вона зустрічає Мікеле, сина місцевого фермера, у якого закохується юна Розетта, а він закохується у Чезіру. Минають дні, поступово містечко наповнюється біженцями, бомбардування посилюються, а продуктів стає дедалі менше. Мікеле виводить з містечка декількох німців безпечним шляхом, а Чезіра і Розетта повертаються в уже безпечний Рим. По дорозі мама і донька переживають трагедію, яка змінює їхнє життя назавжди.
