У 1990-і роки Вайда знову звертається до теми війни, окупації. Канонада супроводжує весь фільм "Страсний тиждень" (1995). Варшава 1943 року. Повстання... Героїню - єврейку Ірену Лілієн, дочку професора, якій вдалося втекти від гестапо, ховає сім'я поляків Малецьких. Але перепочинок триває недовго: до кінця тижня повстання придушене, місто горить. Проте Ірена продовжує боротьбу за життя...
