Сильна історія вразила серця італійців та несподівано надихнула на опір проти фашистської партії, яка тоді була при владі. За кілька місяців після прем'єри фільм було заборонено та наказано знищити диктатором Беніто Муссоліні. Проте оператори, ризикуючи життям, зберегли плівку.
