Based on A. Galych's play "Matrosskaya Tishina", "Papa" tells a story of a Jewish father who dreamed of seeing his son perform on a stage in front of huge audiences, he dreamed of seeing him as the greatest violinist of his time. To achieve the goal he taught his son Dodik how to play the violin from the yearly age. When Dodik grew up he left the small town he and his father lived in to study in the Moscow Conservatory leaving his past behind. Фільм про подорож, справжню Одіссею, розпочату трьома вірними друзями середньої вгодованості і середніх років. Колись давно на одній з московських околиць жили три товариші: Сашка — «Котячий пан», Борька — «Чижик» і Васька — «Індик». Плаваючи на старенькому човнику по Яузі і фантазуючи про плавання по великій річці, вони присяглися один одному колись зустрінутися і здійснити свою мрію. Минули роки. Чижик став відомим московським хірургом Чижовим, Сашка — професором-тваринником Лапіним, Васька — академіком архітектури Ністратовим, що працював на будівництві перших висоток столиці. Згадавши про дану давно один одному обіцянку, вірні друзі вирушають на дерев'яному плоту в плавання вниз по річці і зазнають безліч пригод.
