Rufino (15) roams the streets of Mexico City. He tries his best to look after the youngest homeless children who survive on a diet of glue and hash and sleep in the sewers at night. Rufino earns some money doing hard and dirty work, such as moving meat around a slaughterhouse. Rufino sells a bag of cocaine for Ochoa, a corrupt cop who has Rufino's district in his power and is also the lover of Rufino's adoptive mother. He decides to use the money to flee the city with his girlfriend and her baby. Ochoa sets off after them. Just as Rufino seems able to escape, he finds out that his real father is still alive. Obsessed by this knowledge, Rufino doesn't want to leave until he has found his father.

Літературною основою фільму став детективний роман Вільяма Айріша «Вальс у темряві», який у 1969 р. екранізував Франсуа Трюффо під назвою «Сирена з «Міссісіпі» (з Жан-Полем Бельмондо та Катрін Деньов). Чудово розуміючи, що не зможе перевершити геніального француза, Крістофер зробив ставку на еротичні сцени за участю сучасних секс-символів. Бандерас згадував: «Коли я прочитав кінцевий варіант сценарію, то злякався: половина картини складалася з мого оголеного тіла. Анжеліна Джолі також була шокована».

"The Other Conquest" opens with the infamous massacre of the Aztecs at the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan [what is now called Mexico City]. The sacred grounds are covered with the countless bodies of priests and nobility slaughtered by the Spanish Armies under CortÃ©s' command. The lone Aztec survivor of the massacre is a young Indian scribe named Topiltzin [DamiÃ¡n Delgado]. Topiltzin, who is the illegitimate son of the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma, survives the onslaught by burying himself under a stack of bodies. As if awakening from a dream, the young man rises from among the dead to find his mother murdered, the Spanish in power and the dawn of a new era in his native land.
