Джессі і Марк втратили сина. Молода пара вирішує змінити своє життя і взяти в сім'ю дитину - восьмирічного хлопчика Коді. Вони не знають однієї дуже дивної але важливої деталі: хлопчик страшенно боїться спати. Дізнавшись про це, спочатку Джессі і Марк припускають, що причиною тому стало погане поводження попередніх батьків з дитиною. Але їх здогадка виявляється невірною, коли сни Коді починають матеріалізуватися на очах у пари. Чудеса уяви хлопчика приводять їх у захват, але дітям часто сняться і кошмари.
