The Carsons have a small party to toast the new graduates. Steven declares that Vincent is a very complicated man, then insists Betty accompany him to dinner. On her way to meet with Norman for the prom, Rita is grabbed by Joe, who forces her into a deserted warehouse, where he begins kissing her violently. She pulls away from him and screams as he approaches her menacingly.
