Овдовіла Росарія Паронді й четверо її синів вирішують переїхати зі злиденного Сицилійського села в Мілан, де живе п'ятий син. У пошуках кращої долі й гідного заробітку брати не гребують ніякої роботи. Поступово кожний знаходить своє місце.Але відносини в колись згуртованій родині розколюються: красень Рокко вступає в протиборство зі своїм жорстоким братом Сімоном. «Яблуком розбрату» стає дівчина легкого поводження Надя, що вирішила залишити роботу й вийти заміж. Саме її прихильності домагаються брати.
Сюжет
Італія. 1943 рік. Молода вдова Чезіра кидає лавку в Сан-Лоренцо на піклування колишнього коханця і біжить від американських бомбардувань разом з дочкою-підлітком, Розеттою, в своє рідне село. Після виснажливої подорожі, вона зустрічає Мішеля, сина місцевого фермера, в якого закохується юна Розетта, а він закохується в її прекрасну маму.
