Початок 20 століття. Сіцилія. Вдівець, що живе на межі убогості, фермер Сальваторе вирішує разом зі всією сім'єю, включаючи немолоду матір, емігрувати в США. Напередодні переїзду, він знайомиться з Люсі, яку на вигляд і манерам цілком можна прийняти за англійську леді. Вона так само як і Сальваторе збирається в США. Сюжет
