Події відбуваються в феодальній Японії. В центрі сюжету двоє втікачів: чоловік, якого розшукують за винагороду та маленька дівчинка. Він — Кандзюро Номі, самурай, який носить порожні піхви, бо втратив меч, а разом з ним і честь, а вона — його дочка Тае. Переживши кілька замахів, здійснених мисливцями за головами, він потрапляє в руки правосуддя в особі господаря префектури, і засуджується до "тридцяти днів". Таку практику префект увів тому, що його малолітній син перестав сміятись відтоді, як його мати померла під час епідемії, яка також забрала життя дружини Номі. Засудженим злочинцям дають 30 днів на спроби розсмішити хлопчика, по одній спробі на день. Якщо це не вдається, злочинця страчують, що для такого самурая, як Номі, означає сепуку...
