Три новели: «Вирішальна сутичка» (містичний вестерн), «Король дороги» (психологічний трилер), і «Боягуз» (військова драма) зняті трьома уславленими режисерами за участю зірок Голлівуду. Історії замислювалися як короткометражки для альманаху «Байки зі склепу» і скріплені живим ведучим, якого грає актор Вільям Седлер.Історія перша. Крутий бандит і грабіжник Біллі заїжджає в придорожній бар. Тут його чекає несподівана зустріч з привидами - всіма тими, кого він колись убив.
У другій історії Джо Геррету - в минулому відомомому гонщику, королю автостради, а тепер поліцейському теж доведеться зустрітися з минулим. Молода людина на ім'я Біллі стверджує, що знає таємницю Геррета. Натомість за мовчання він вимагає, щоб Джо позмагався з ним.
Історія третя. Син бойового генерала, для якого честь понад усе, боягуз. Він відмовляється виконувати наказ, через нього гинуть солдати. Військовий трибунал під керівництвом батька присуджує його до розстрілу...
