У Саллі Гайд (Джейн Фонда) складне матеріальне становище. Її чоловік Боб (Брюс Дерн) воює у В'єтнамі. Вона влаштовується санітаркою у військовий госпіталь, де працює її подруга Віолет (Пенелопа Мілфорд). Там вона зустрічає давнього друга, Люка Мартіна (Джон Войт).
