Магістрат, банкір, герцог і монсеньйор заманюють групу молодих чоловіків і жінок на ізольовану віллу, де їх піддають безжальним, майже ритуальним тортурам, посвячують полонених в правила гри, побудованої на сексуальних збоченнях. "Вперше я знімаю фільм про сучасний світ, - говорив режисер - порушуючи всі мислимі умовності буржуазного смаку". Фільм розділено на три частини відповідно до Пекла за де Садом: коло безумства, коло екскрементів і коло крові. Причому аргонавти показані аж ніяк не романтично героїчно, а скоріше нагадують найманців-мародерів. Більша ж частина фільму присвячена другій половині життя Мідеї і Ясона: зустріч, любов і розставання. Кинута, і навіть вигнана Мідея не може простити підступництва свого колишнього улюбленого, що проміняв її заради весілля із Глоціею, дочкою короля Креона.
