Свою першу роль Наталі зіграла у віці 4 років, у фільмі «Happy Land» (1943), хоча в титрах її імені не було. Офіційний дебют актриси відбувся у фільмі «Tomorrow Is Forever» (1946), де її партнерами були Orson Welles та Claudette Colbert.
У 1955 році у США виходить фільм «Rebel Without a Cause» з James Dean, де Наталі з ... іграла Джуді , одну з головних ролей. Після ролі С'юзен Вокер у фільмі «Miracle on 34th Street» (1947), роль Джуді стала другим переломним моментом у кар'єрі Наталі , перевівши актрису з дитячого амплуа в доросле.
На почату 1960-х років кар'єра Наталі переживає новий неймовірний злет. Відбувається прем'єра фільму «West Side Story» (1961), в якому Наталі грає Марію — головну жіночу роль. Протягом цього десятиріччя Наталі була двічі номінована на «Оскар» за головні жіночі ролі фільмах «Splendor in the Grass» (1961) і «Love with the Proper Stranger» (1963). Крім цього, протягом 1960-х років Наталі була 5 разів номінована на «Золотий глобус» за найкращу жіночу роль у фільмах ««Splendor in the Grass», «Love with the Proper Stranger», а також «Gypsy» (1962), «Inside Daisy Clover» (1965) і «This Property Is Condemned» (1966).
У 1970-х років Наталі знімається значно менше, присвятивши себе ррдині та поринувши з головою у материнські клопоти.
