The little mermaid rescues a prince from drowning and falls in love with him. To be with him, she makes a deal with the evil sorceress: her beautiful voice against a life on land. It seems to work at first, the prince is enchanted with her lovely appearance. But the memory of a foreign princess still haunts him: The one who found him on the beach where the mermaid had left him, and whom he (of course) believes to be his saviour. To resolve this mistake is too much for the mute little mermaid, and not even her father, king of all seas, can help her in the impending catastrophe.

If he wants to keep his job, master craftsman Kroupa (Jirà Sovák) is going to have to improve his qualifications through further training and completing his school-leaving exams. Kroupa is persuaded to go back to school by his subordinates who fear that the unbearable Hujer (Václav Lohniský), who has already signed on for schooling, may get promoted and take Kroupa's place. The students at the evening classes of the technical college are all middle-aged people. Even so, there are go-getters, shirkers and slobs among them just like in any other school.

If he wants to keep his job, master craftsman Kroupa (Jirà Sovák) is going to have to improve his qualifications through further training and completing his school-leaving exams. Kroupa is persuaded to go back to school by his subordinates who fear that the unbearable Hujer (Václav Lohniský), who has already signed on for schooling, may get promoted and take Kroupa's place. Sixteen-year-old students of a grammar school are supposed to write essays on "Love". The class best student Andrea (Jaroslava Schallerová) writes about a patriotic love to a country as she has no experience with a partner love. She has been living alone with her divorced pretty mother Eva (Milena Dvorská), a dentist, for many years. Recently, however, Eva met her former school-days love at a graduates' party, nowadays a famous hockey goalkeeper Brukner (Frantisek Velecký). Also his marriage fell apart; he leaves the national team and decides to leave Prague for his home town and to share flat with Eva. He takes with him his son Petr (Oldrich Kaiser), in Andrea's age, who gets his last chance to finish a grammar school in the town.

Сюжет
Vše začíná jednoho večera v luxusním hotelu Excelsior, kde můžete potkat manžele Matoušovy a Janíkovy, Němce Hanse-Joachima Kirchmayera, číšníka Pepiho, pianistu Krofta, tajemného perského diplomata Mohameda Rasul Zade a samozřejmě ředitele hotelu Arneho Hnízda. Ti všichni se totiž vzápětí stanou podezřelými z vraždy, jejíž obětí se stala Dana Matoušová. Vyšetřování se ujímá inspektor Brůžek ze známé "mordparty", a když se případ ukáže komplikovanější než se zdálo, přichází také jeho kolega Bouše a jejich nadřízený, pan vrchní rada Vacátko.
