Однак новину про те, що він робитиме фільм про останні дванадцять годин життя Ісуса Христа, більшість зустріла з подивом, особливо коли стали відомі подробиці проекту. Гібсон хотів знімати картину на двох «мертвих» мовах - латинській та арамейській, причому без субтитрів. На ці мови текст сценарію переклав професор лінгвістики Білл Фулко, який також був консультантом на зйомках. «Усі думають, що я божевільний, і це, можливо, правда, - заявив Мел у вересні 2002 р. - Але, можливо, я геній. Ідея виникла у моїй порожній голові десять років тому і поступово набувала обрисів. І от тепер я маю чіткий план. Я думаю, що ця історія є і позачасовою, і дуже сучасною. Хочу показати людяність Христа та його священний аспект».
