Йосип Віссаріонович Сталін (справжнє прізвище Джугашвілі) народився в Горі, Тифліська губернія, Російська імперія – радянський політичний, державний, військовий та партійний діяч, російський революціонер. Фактичний керівник СРСР. Генеральний секретар ЦК КПРС (1922–1953). Маршал Радянського Союзу (1943), Генералісимус Радянського Союзу (1945). Народний комісар оборони СРСР (з 19 липня 1941 року), Голова Раднаркому СРСР та Голова Державного комітету оборони СРСР. Обіймав також посади: З 3 квітня 1 ... 922 по 10 лютого 1934 року – генерального секретаря, потім – секретаря ЦК ВКП(б) (з 1952 року – КПРС), з 19 грудня 1930 року, після обіймання посади В'ячеславом Молотовим голови Ради народних комісарів СРСР замість Олексія Рикова. 1912 року на пропозицію В.І. Леніна був включений до ЦК РСДРП. Тоді ж Йосип Джугашвілі остаточно обрав собі псевдонім Сталін. Під час Жовтневої революції, Другим Всеросійським з'їздом було обрано членом ВЦВК та РНК. У 1922 році на Пленумі ЦК РКП(б) був обраний членом Оргбюро та Політбюро ЦК РКП(б), а також Генеральним секретарем ЦК РКП(б) (під час перебування Леніна на посаді Голови РНК СРСР). У 1930 році, після ослаблення та смерті Леніна, Сталін остаточно вийшов переможцем із внутрішньопартійної боротьби, ставши керівником держави. Сталін був фактичним засновником тоталітарної диктатури СРСР. У 1928-1929 роках був ініціатором переходу з курсу нової економічної політики (НЕПу) на курс індустріалізації, колективізації та побудови планової економіки, активізував політику культурної революції в СРСР.

Ayn Rand was born in 1905 in St. Petersberg, Russia. She escaped to America in 1926 amidst the rise of Soviet Communism. She remained in the United States for the rest of her life, where she became a much respected author of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. The themes of freedom and individualism were to be her life's passion, and would win her a devoted following among readers. Her books continue to sell over 300,000 copies each year. Upon her arrival in America, Ayn Rand applied for a screenwriting position at the DeMille Studios in Hollywood. On that same day, a chance meeting with DeMille brought her to the set of The King of Kings where she was hired as an extra for the film. But, it wasn't until her 1936 Broadway success, Night of January 16th, that she first achieved fame as a writer. The play, a courtroom drama that was tried before a jury drawn from the audience each night, had two endings for each verdict. Although a success, it was Ayn's first struggle to keep the integrity of her script intact from those who did not share her vision.

Революція, солідарність трудящих, етнічна і класова нетерпимість, масові рухи, колективна агресія, диктатура – режисер намагається знайти пояснення цим важливим для історії ХХ сторіччя явищам в психоаналітичній теорії. Не випадково роки кінохроніки обмежуються двома важливими датами – 1896 і 1939 роками і відображають події, сучасником яких був Зиґмунд Фройд. У 1896 році Фройд розпочав роботу над своїм першим фундаментальним текстом «Тлумачення сновидінь», де він винайшов поняття «несвідоме», а брати Люм’єри продемонстрували свій перший фільм і, як вважається, винайшли кіно. У вересні 1939 року Фройд помер у Лондоні, куди він переїхав з Відня після аншлюсу Австрії нацистською Німеччиною, цього ж місяця розпочалася Друга світова війна.
