There has been no shortage of women in private investigator Varg Veum's life, but not for the long haul. There has been no shortage of women in private investigator Varg Veum's life, but not for the long haul. When the search for her estranged husband Jonas's car brings Varg together with Wenche Andresen, he believes he may have found the one. But there's a problem; Jonas ends up dead, and Wenche is the cops' prime suspect. До затишного норвезького містечка за полярним колом прибувають двоє шведських детективів, аби допомогти місцевій поліції розслідувати жорстоке вбивство сімнадцятирічної дівчини. Досвідчений слідчий Йонас Енгстрем розробляє хитромудрий план затримання, проте під час засідки в густому тумані все йде шкереберть: переслідуючи підозрюваного, Енгстрем випадково застрелює свого напарника. Намагаючись приховати помилку від колег, він опиняється на межі божевілля. Психологічний тиск посилюється нестерпним полярним днем, який позбавляє детектива сну, та загадковим убивцею, що став єдиним свідком його злочину і тепер розпочинає з ним підступну психологічну гру.Сюжет

Knut Hamsun is Norway's most famous and admired author. Ever since he was young he has hated the English for the starvation they caused Norway during WWI. When the Germans occupy Norway on April 9, 1940, he welcomes them and the protection they can give from Great Britain. He supports the national socialist ideals, but opposes the way these ideals are turned into action - that Norwegians are jailed and executed.
