Він оголосив війну білим переселенцям за те, що ті споюють його плем'я, вимінюючи золото на дешеве віскі, і хочуть захопити золотоносний струмок. Джонні Хоукс, свого часу кращий друг індіанців, повертається на дикий захід після громадянської війни, з метою повернутися до мирного життя. Герой підряджається провести караван переселенців через землі племені Сіу до родючих рівнин. Домігшись підписання тимчасового мирного договору з вождем плем'я, колоністи вирушають в дорогу. Але серед білих є також незадоволені - вони роблять все можливе, щоб порушити домовленість і хитрістю вивідати золоте родовище племені. Через їх жадібність на гірській стежці пролита кров мирних індіанців. У відповідь на вбивство, вождь піднімає сокиру війни і, тільки завдяки силі переконання Джонні Хоукса, вдається зупинити нове кровопролиття...

Tom Brewster, handy with a rope but not a gun, rides into town and mails his lawyer's exam. When his lack of ability with a gun is exposed, the town boss Turlock offers him the job of Sheriff but he refuses. When the mail is robbed leaving him without a job to ride to, he changes his mind. But Turlock has misjudged Tom and Tom without a gun is soon on the trail of the former Sheriff's killer and it will lead to Turlock.

Major Lex Kearney, dishonorably discharged from the army for cowardice in battle, has actually volunteered to go undercover to try to prevent raids against shipments of horses desperately needed for the Union war effort. Falling in with the gang of jayhawkers and Confederate soldiers who have been conducting the raids, he gradually gains their trust and is put in a position where he can discover who has been giving them secret information revealing the routes of the horse shipments.

Kincaid volunteers to lead nine other Legionnaires on a mission to delay Hussin's attack till reinforcements arrive. When he discovers that Hussin plans to marry Mahla, a girl from a rival tribe, in order to build a coalition against the French, Kincaid kidnaps Mahla. Hussin forcefully takes her back, but by now his planned attack on Tarfa is crumbling and Mahla has begun to fall in love with Kincaid.

Scott, a troubled Coast Guardsman assigned to a fog-bound station on a remote stretch of beach, suffers from Post Traumatic Stress when he survives a mine explosion that sinks his ship. Although he is engaged to a beautiful young woman who loves him, he becomes involved with an enigmatic femme fatale whom he meets near the beached wreckage of a torpedoed ship. She is married to a renowned painter who was blinded in a traumatic, but mysterious incident, details of which are very hazy. Although they only live in a small cottage, the couple have an ambivalent relationship especially in regards to his priceless cache of unsold paintings, a relationship that evolves into a romantic triangle as Scott falls under her seductive spell.
