За часів наполеонівських воєн молодий офіцер знаходить рукопис, що стосується історії його дідуся, капітана охорони Альвана Ворд. Альван, людина честі шукає коротку дорогу через Сієрра Морена. У готелі він зустрічає двох східних принцес. Вони ставляться до нього, як до кузена, і намагаються всіляко його спокусити. Потім він прокидається під шибеницею, на якій висять два мерці, та перестає відрізняти де правда, а де фантазія...
