Fifteen-year-old Adele wants to die. She's felt alienated by everything around her since the death of her brother. All that remains in her dull, hard-working life is profound sadness. Timo (43) is on the run. Eight years ago he had been found guilty of murder and jailed. Now he has finally managed to break out of prison. Injured and exhausted, he tries to hide on Adele's parents' farm. When Adele discovers the escapee, she makes him a frank and eerie offer: she will help him to flee, but once they are in safety, Timo is to kill her. Timo is forced by his circumstances to accept this morbid pact. Suspicion and distrust accompany them on a journey that leads them all the way to Marseille. The boundary between perpetrator and victim fades. The frail Timo can barely stand to be close to this girl; Adele reminds him of his dark duties. He seeks help from the only doctor among the soldiers, Sinisa, who diagnoses a sexually transmitted disease. Not wishing his wife to know about it and trying to find excuses not to go home, he declares a state of emergency, claiming that the Albanian army is preparing an attack against Yugoslavia. A joke transforms into war hysteria: soldiers dig trenches, Pasic grows wilder as the days go by, Sinisa embarks on a dangerous liaison, and his best friend Ljuba decides to leave the army. The situation slowly runs out of control...

In the Bosnian town of Tesanj, not long after the Balkan war, land mines claim victims, corruption is rampant, women are trafficked into Serbia, but there's a sort of peace. Zaim, the retired police chief, has alcoholic visions of his dead son Adnan, whose body's missing. Adnan's siblings, Faruk and Azra, watch their father's decline. It's announced that President Clinton will pay Tesanj a visit to see the new harmony. Whores are hidden from sight, Serbs are trucked in to integrate the neighborhood; the children's choir learns "House of the Rising Sun." Meanwhile, Faruk wants to sort out his brother's death to bring some peace to his house. Can it work out? Irony is everywhere.
