Following the failure of a relationship high-flying solicitor Jane Kennedy returns to the small Devon coastal town of Lighthaven, that she left when she was a teenager. She takes up the position of coroner investigating sudden, violent and suspicious deaths. Jane moves back in with her mother and Beth, Jane's teenage daughter. In her new role Jane must work alongside Davey Higgins, the boy who once broke her heart, who is now the local Detective Sergeant.

Спекотного липневого ранку, в розпал туристичного сезону в дорсетському містечку під назвою Бродчорч зникає 11-річний школяр Денні Латимер. Його мати, Бет, починає шукати його, тоді як її краща подруга, Еллі Міллер, офіцер місцевої поліції, виходить з відпустки на роботу і виявляє, що підвищення, на яке вона розраховувала, дістається інспектору Алеку Гарді, приїжджому з репутацією невдахи. Коли тіло Денні знаходять під мальовничими скелями, що обрамляють місто, вони зустрічаються. І Міллер, і Гарді твердо мають намір вирішити загадку вбивства Денні. Еллі, можливо, занадто співчуваючи людям, які її оточують, Алек настільки ж ефективно, скільки й безпристрасно. Коли новина про злочин розлітається по місту, запускається ланцюгова реакція, яка приверне до Бродчерчу увагу всієї країни, витягаючи на світло місто, його мешканців та їхні секрети.
