За мотивами однойменного твору Редьярда Кіплінґа.Командир 1-го батальйону Ратлендширського полку, полковник Брансвік мав надійного помічника, капітана Пінденні, і трьох здібних, але не завжди надійних рядових, Акройда, Маллоя та Сайкса, які протягом вісімнадцяти років були «королівськими льодяниками"; втікали, щоб випити, побитися та пограти в азартні ігри, коли могли. Всупереч їхнім бажанням, один з них мусив бути підвищений до сержанта, щоб розлучити їх. Вибір впав на Акройда.
