Сюжет

Дія відбувається в світі, аналогічному сучасній Японії. Центральний персонаж аніме та манґи — Куросакі Ічіґо, рудоволосий п'ятнадцятирічний школяр, здатний з дитинства спілкуватися з духами та привидами, невидимими для звичайних людей. Одного разу з ним стикається дівчина — шініґамі (дослівно «бог смерті») Кучікі Рукіа, яка полювала на злого духа («порожнього»). У битві з порожнім вона отримує поранення та вимушена передати свої здібності Ічіґо Куросакі. В результаті Ічіґо сам стає шініґамі, а Рукіа позбавляється більшої частини сили. Так починаються пригоди Ічіґо та Рукії, які разом захищають світ від порожніх та переправляють душі в «Світ Душ».

.hack//Liminality is an OVA series directly related to the .hack video game series for the PlayStation 2, with the perspective of Liminality focused on the real world as opposed to the games' MMORPG The World. Liminality was separated into four volumes; each volume was released with its corresponding game. The initial episode is 45 minutes long, while subsequent episodes are 30 minutes long. The video series was directed by Koichi Mashimo, written by Kazunori Itō with music by Yuki Kajiura. Primary Animation production was handled by Mashimo's studio Bee Train which collaborated for the four games as well as handled major production on .hack//Sign.

Tenchi Masaki is a normal high school student in Japan, who spends the summers doing chores around his grandfather's family shrine. One day, Tenchi manages to steal the key to a mysterious cave where an oni (Japanese demon) is said to have been sealed away by his ancester Yoshou, whose sword still stands guard over it. When he enters this cave, he finds that, much to his surprise, the legend is indeed true when the oni's dessicated skeletal form ("mira"--Japanese mummy) comes to life and attacks him. Tenchi flees the cave in a panic, and later returns to high school, taking the hilt--seemingly all that remains of the ancestral sword--with him. At school, Tenchi is again attacked by the oni, whose name is Ryouko, who has now completely revived herself. Tenchi manages to defeat her with the sword's help, but this is only the beginning of a hilarious Japanese romantic comedy OAV (Original Animation Video, the Japanese equivalent of American made-for-video movies) series which has spawned several spin-off OAVs, soundtrack and drama CDs, and a new TV series in Japan.
