Фільм створено на основі першого роману італійського письменника Паоло Джордано, опублікованого у січні 2008 року, який відразу став бестселером в Італії і був перекладений понад 30-ма мовами, в т.ч. українською у видавництві Старого Лева, в 2016 р.«Прості числа діляться тільки на одиницю і самі на себе. Кожне з них посідає своє місце у безконечному шерезі натуральних чисел, затиснуте, як і всі числа, поміж двома іншими, але на крок далі, ніж решта. Ці числа — непевні й самотні, і саме тому Матія вважав їх достоту дивовижними. Іноді він думав, що в тому шерезі вони опинилися випадково, от просто потрапили там у пастку, нанизані разом, немов коралинки у намисті» - пише Паоло Джордано. Два простих числа, які розділяє тільки одне парне число, вважаються близнюками. - «Загалом серед математиків побутує переконання, що, просуваючись уперед, рано чи пізно неодмінно натрапиш на наступну пару простих чисел, хоч ніхто не може завчасу сказати, де вони, аж доки їх не знайде. Матія, власне, й мав себе з Аліче за таку-от пару простих чисел, за близнюків, самотніх і загублених, близьких — але близьких недостатньо…».
Проте «Самотність простих чисел» — це не лише історія про самотню пару «близнюків» Аліче та Матію, не лише історія про їхнє зближення та розходження, дивакувату спорідненість і неординарність.
