Іспанія, 1937 рік. Виникають нові кордони, з'являються нові переконання… світ уже не буде таким, як колись. У той час як мешканці містечка Герніка пристосовуються до щоденних реалій громадянської війни, американський журналіст (Джеймс Д'Арсі) таємно змовляється із цензоркою з місцевої прес-служби (Марія Вальверде), щоб боротися проти дедалі суворіших обмежень свободи слова. Усе змінюється, коли німецька артилерія обстрілює місто, тепер преса перетворюється на ключову зброю. Фільм знято на основі реальних подій обстрілу, що стали передумовою до Другої світової війни.
