Король (майстерна гра Хоторна) страждав порфірією, хворобою що вражає нервову систему. Це спадкоємна недуга проявляється періодично, і напади її непередбачувані. Одним з таких нападів скористалися політики на чолі з містером Фоксом і принцом Уельський (Еверетт), щоб перехопити владу у прем'єр-міністра містера Пітта. Безвольний, але марнославний денді принц Уельський домагався регенства тільки для того, щоб був визнаний його таємний шлюб і ніхто не заважав його світським розвагам. Ми бачимо, як лікарі, куплені принцом, буквально катували нещасного безумця, поки за лікування не взявся справжній лікар, який спеціалізувався на лікуванні душевнохворих.
