Сюжет (англ.)

Recently widowed American opera diva Caterina takes her teenaged son Joe with her on a long singing tour to Italy. Absorbed in her hectic work in various Verdi operas around Rome, Caterina is soon shocked to discover that her troubled and lonely son has become a heroin addict. Her desperate attempts to wean the youth off the drug result in an incestuous relationship, but also in a possibility to reunite Joe--maybe even herself--with his real father, whose existence she has kept a secret from him.

Сюжет

Прекрасним літнім ранком 1900 року в італійській провінції Емілія з'являються на світ два хлопчики. Олмо - ще один рот в багатодітній сім'ї бідного селянина. Альфредо - нащадок багатих поміщиків. Не дивлячись на так різне соціальне положення, хлопчики не тільки подружаться, але пронесуть дружбу через все своє життя.
Вони - діти страшних років Європи, чиє отроцтво припаде на роки Першої світової війни, а зрілість вступить в свої права під гуркіт гітлерівських знарядь. Та і в проміжку подій буде предостатньо. Фашистська Італія - країна неспокійна.

Athos Magnani, a young researcher, returns to Tara, where his father was killed before his birth, at the request of Draifa. The father, also named Athos Magnani and looking exactly like the son, was killed by a fascist in 1936 -- or so says Draifa (his mistress), the town statue, and everyone in town. As the son untangles the web of lies this story is constructed from, he finds himself ensnared in the same web.
