У Роберта Дюволла вмирає стара мати, а через кілька днів йому передають її передсмертний лист, в якому вона повідомляє, що він син чорношкірої служниці від її чоловіка. Вона пише йому, що його абсолютно чорний брат (Джеймс Ерл Джонс) живе в Чикаго, і висловлює останню волю, щоб він знайшов його і побачився з ним. Після деяких коливань Дюволл виконує волю матері і зустрічається з братом, колишнім поліцейським, який працює тепер охоронцем. Після короткої, зовсім сентиментальної розмови він їде, але по дорозі його побили і пограбували. Довелося затриматися, і тоді вже вони впізнали один одного набагато ближче. Зовсім непроста ситуація, коли ти раптом дізнаєшся, що ти негр. Автори фільму побудували на цьому далекому для нашого глядача матеріалі непогану драму.
