The film comprises three cinematic novellas: (1) “And They Arrived at the Peasant’s Hut… or the Adventures of Writer Senya in Search of the Hidden Word,” in which writer Senya draws inspiration for his rural novels from his housekeeper Yermolayevna’s tales; (2) “The Song, or How the Great Louarsab Organized a Choir,” where a city visitor attempts to form a choir of centenarian elders in a Georgian mountain village; (3) “What Is Our Life?! or What Is Our Life?!”—during a musical reenactment of pre-Revolutionary France, a drunken actor’s tardiness forces King Louis XIV (also the theater committee chairman) and the cast to improvise the play’s ending.

At the end of 1943, during the occupation in Odessa, a new specialist Kraft arrives at the shipyard and soon becomes a chief engineer. It never occurred to anyone that a Soviet intelligence officer was hiding under the guise of a leader showing official zeal. At the decisive moment, when the victorious offensive of the Soviet troops forces the German-Romanian invaders to leave Odessa, on the instructions of the Center, Kraft leaves with them for further work behind enemy lines.

У місті, захопленому колчаківцями, готується повстання, але раптом, несподівано для білих, під укіс летить ешелон, а підписується під цією диверсією якась «Армія Трясогузки». Лютує колчаківська контррозвідка, яка безуспішно намагається знайти сліди підпільників. Зацікавилися таємничими союзниками і більшовики. З'ясовується, що грізна армія складається з трьох хлопчаків-безпритульників: російського хлопчика на прізвисько Трясогузка, латиша Мікі і циганчука. Про те, як вони допомагали більшовикам звільняти місто від білогвардійців, і розповідає ця картина.
