The team investigates an arson murder involving head pastor Tolle, who is found burned to death inside the Jeriko parish church. The church’s other pastor is Ellen Bengtsdotter Dahl, a childhood friend of Alex. The case quickly becomes personal, and Alex faces difficult choices as her professional duties clash with her past.

At the same time, the case is linked to an older investigation into the "Balcony Man", which brings Martin Beck back to the department.
