Суворе літо 1941 року. Єврейська община маленького румунського села збирається побудувати справжній потяг і бігти на ньому від нацистів до Палестини.До процесу євреї підходять серйозно і діловито - всім селом збирають гроші на потяг, голять бороди, вивчають німецький і репетирують ролі власних гнобителів. Їх волею до життя і незламним бажанням вижити потяг стає на рейки і відправляється в довгу, неймовірну подорож, повну небезпек, розчарувань, відчаю і абсурду...

In the early 19th century the Romanian Theodor Diamant was inspired by the French utopian socialist Charles Fourier and established one of Fourier's "phalansteries" in Rumania. The film dramatizes the origins and demise of this effort, called the "Scaieni Phalanstery (the term is derived from "phalanx" and "monastery"). Among the socio-political commentary that is conveyed throughout, there is an important collusion between the army and the wealthy landowners of the time, and as the film points out in its own way, neither of these groups has ever been convicted of socialist/utopian tendencies.

1939 рік. У королівській Румунії встановлена диктатура генерала Антонеску. Легіонери з карального угруповання «Залізна гвардія», що таємно мріяли про захоплення влади нелегально розправляються зі своїми політичними супротивниками. Так, у в'язниці «Верага» ними був влаштований кривавий розстріл небезпечних для них опонентів-ув'язнених. Але про вбивства у «Веразі» стає відомо громадськості.
