Двоє друзів - Енцо Молінарі та Жак Майоль - разом росли на одному з грецьких островів. Батько Жака, пірнальник, загинув при збиранні устриць через несправність водолазного обладнання. Проходять роки, хлопчики вже виросли й знову зустрічаються через багато років. Обидва стали пірнальниками на глибину без повітря, і змагання на чемпіонатах світу практично ведеться тільки між ними. Симпатична працівниця страхового агентства Джоан, закохується в Жака з першого погляду і їде за ним з Перу в Сицилію, де і стає свідком початку небезпечного двобою між друзями. Від Жака вона вже чекає дитину. А друзі пірнають все на більшу і більшу глибину. Пройдено відмітку у 120 метрів. Для Жака і Енцо блакитна безодня краще, ніж життя на землі.
