Державний службовець Ватанабе дізнався про жахливий вирок – через хворобу жити йому лишилося щонайбільше – рік. Ця звістка змусила його переглянути усе своє життя – і непорозуміння із сином, і роботу на бюрократичну бездушну машину, і лицемірство суспільства. Збагнувши, що життя змарновано, він вирішує зробити бодай одну добру справу – побудувати дитячий майданчик на місці захаращеної пустки на околиці міста. Колись покірний і безвільний чиновник перетворюється на борця – він не поступається ані перед гнівом начальників, ані перед відвертими погрозами бандитів і задля втілення своєї мрії проходить усі кола бюрократичного пекла до кінця.

Щоб якось зайняти батьків, вони відправляють їх на курорт до Атамі. Після безсонної ночі на галасливому курорті батьки повертаються назад і приймають рішення їхати додому, оскільки розуміють, що для всіх буде найкраще, якщо вони поїдуть і не заважатимуть сім'ям дітей жити своїм життям, в якому для них місця вже немає.

Charu lives a lonely and idle life in 1870s India. However, after several months, Charu and Amal's feelings for each other move beyond literary friendship.

Miss Kitty Bright tells him to look her up when he learns how to swing. Finally, listening to the pendulum clock at night, Johnny gets the beat. He rushes out to where everyone is playing and sings "Easy As Rollin' Off a Log" to Kitty Bright. She joins in; he grabs a trumpet for an instrumental break, with the complete band. They both fall off a log; she covers him with kisses.
